  • Heartbreak Symphony

    By Laekan Zea Kemp
    4 stars

Very moving, very insightful portrayal of the realities of both grief and a system / society that relentlessly attacks POC. Our world is broken but America is more broken than other places. #racismcentral Weirdly, I felt a bit divorced from the characters, like I wasn't inside their story, even as an observer. The story felt entirely their own, and I was the voyeur - hard to explain!! Probs my white privilege barrier that allowed me to sympathise but not empathise. Y11, Y12 CW: death of a parent, anxiety, smidge of suicidal ideation NCEA level 1: the destructive nature of racism, the transformative power of grief

4.5 stars rounded up OMG, this was weird but very engaging!! I couldn't put it down - I needed to know what happened next. And now I need to read book 2! High points: ✔️ MC is a chronic people-pleaser, and we get to see his internal as well as external monologues, which can be quite funny at times! ✔️Tender, sweet relationship ✔️ Some very twisty characters! CW: body horror, psychological manipulation Y10 Y11

  • The Killing Code

    By Ellie Marney
    4 stars

Really enjoyable women-centric book that celebrates the power and joy of young women juxtaposed against one #$%&* who wants them dead. As they break codes for the war, these four women seek to break the code of the killer ... sisterhood despite the divisive nature of segregation and social status. I liked the pace (others have complained) but if you like speed, this probs isn't for you. The story built well and entwined the different threads and themes to a somewhat scary climax. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ CW: off page sexual assault, murder, body horror, racism, sexism, lesbomisia, queermisia
