A short and sweet story of a nine year old and her friendship with her elderly grandmother who has dementia. Set in my city in a neighbouring suburb, it reminded me a lot of my own grandmother and the relationship I had with her and will always treasure.

A beautiful book about the different lives everyone leads, and how everyone has a story to tell, no matter how small. All love is love.

  • Children of Time

    By Adrian Tchaikovsky
    2 stars

The distant future and what's left of humanity has taken to a spaceship, tracking down terraformed planets their ancestors prepared for them to migrate to once Earth became unhabitable. However, this earth-like planet doesn't have advanced apes waiting for them as expected. Instead, another life form has evolved to take the dominant role of humanity in this world. An interesting concept, but I feel that it would have benefited from being a short story instead of a 600-page long novel. The characters felt flat and there was little plot, just a lot of world building. I can see the appeal but it is not the kind of book I personally enjoy.

  • Prisoners of Geography

    By Tim Marshall
    5 stars

Very comprehensive brief-summary-of-the-world book that manages to include a lot of information but at a beginner, easy-to-understand level. It has changed the way I think about geopolitics and I am intrigued to read the next book to find out more.

  • Audition

    By Pip Adam
    4 stars

Alba, Drew and Stanley are three giants trapped, supposedly, with fifteen others on the spaceship "Audition". Without sound, Audition can't be powdered and without power, the giants keep growing. Told through this sci-fi lens, Audition is about systems of oppression and how those with power choose to treat those who they deem to take up too much space.

  • Love in the Time of Cholera

    By Gabriel Garcia Marquez
    4 stars

Book Club book with an overseas friend. Only about halfway through at the moment but I am enjoying it more than the other of Marquez's book that I've read. A long-winded tale of love and its complications.
