  • The Family Experiment

    By John Marrs
    5 stars

Wow, a very scary premise that could become all to real. It still had a twist of sorts at the end.

  • Fire

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

Another in his Earth series - loving it. This was a much more confronting read than the others.

  • James

    By Percival Everett
    5 stars

A very touching look at early American slavery. Amazing read.

  • A Shadow in Moscow

    By Katherine Reay
    5 stars

Wow. This author writes amazing historical non-fiction. This is all about a mother and daughter becoming CIA spies against Russia and all the dangers that brings... This is the second book I've read of hers can't wait to read another of her books!

  • The Man Who Died Twice

    By Richard Osman
    4 stars

Really enjoying this light-hearted, fun series. The characters are very lovable!

  • Sisters Under the Rising Sun

    By Heather Morris
    4 stars

Wow. A heavy read but worth it. I haven't read much about the war through Singapore and POW camps there.

  • We'll Prescribe You a Cat

    By Syou Ishida
    4 stars

I really enjoyed this! Fun premise and reads like a series of short stories but comes together as one in the end.

  • Never Let Me Go

    By Kazuo Ishiguro
    3 stars

Has very high reviews, and a 'classic' in some circles, but it just 'didn't float my boat'...

  • The Bookshop Ladies

    By Faith Hogan
    3 stars

Too, everything perfectly happening at the right time and right place for me...

  • Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop

    By Hwang Bo-Reum
    3 stars

Probably a bit too slow and heavy on the philosophical discussion for me...

  • The Berlin Letters

    By Katherine Reay
    5 stars

A favourite read this year. A fantastic WW2 historical fiction but not based during war times. It looks at the raising and falling of the Berlin Wall through the eyes of a girl who was thrust into the arms of her grandparents (just as the wall was about to go up) to evade East Berlin, and then learns of her family history when older and herself a CIA 'spy' / code breaker.

  • The Starlets

    By Lee Kelly
    4 stars

I enjoyed this - it's not 'high literature' but a really fun mystery!

  • Guilty by Definition

    By Suzy Dent
    5 stars

LOVED this! Not only is this a book for word nerds but it's also a great mystery with a unique premise.

  • The Thursday Murder Club

    By Richard Osman
    4 stars

A fun read - keen to read the next one!

  • Everyone on This Train is a Suspect

    By Benjamin Stevenson
    4 stars

Another along the same lines as his first - I think I enjoyed the first book more but there was a twist at the end... Cool premise again though.

  • This is Why We Lied

    By Karin Slaughter
    5 stars

Wow. Secluded cabin-type mystery mixed with some very damaged souls! My first by this author but I will read more.

  • Blue Sisters

    By Coco Mellors
    5 stars

    Wow. Confronting, intense, but rewarding.

  • The Glassmaker

    By Tracy Chevalier
    5 stars

I loved this. An interesting premise - if you get over the time-hopping it was a great insight into the history of Venice and the Murano glass makers!

  • The Venice Hotel

    By Tess Woods
    4 stars

A lovely romp through Venice! Also highlights the serious danger Venice faces with rising sea levels and over tourism.

  • Remarkably Bright Creatures

    By Shelby Van Pelt
    3 stars

Not as good as I had hoped - a great premise but could've been so much more.

  • Lying Beside You

    By Michael Robotham
    4 stars

Not as good as book two but still gripping!

  • When She Was Good

    By Michael Robotham
    5 stars

The second in the series... Loved learning more about Evie!

  • Spy x Family 12

    By Tatsuya Endo
    5 stars

    Perhaps my favourite manga series!

  • Home Truths

    By Charity Norman
    5 stars

A look at what can result from going 'down the online worm holes'... Sad.

  • High Wire

    By Candice Fox
    4 stars

Wow. This story is not usually my cup of tea (the protagonists are military vets back from Afganistan, but heck the ending was explosive! (Pun may or may not be intended...!) One star taken off for the slow pace for the first 3/4 of the book.

  • Where They Last Saw Her

    By Marcie R Rendon
    4 stars

I didn't realise the extent to which Native American women are kidnapped, murdered, or 'go missing'. Important read.

  • 17 Years Later

    By J.P Pomare
    4 stars

Another great read from this kiwi author! Lost a star due to its fast finish - the story had this slow build and was turning into a great read and then abruptly finished! I really hate how authors seem to think, oh, I'd better end this now and just quickly tie everything up.

  • Good Girl, Bad Girl

    By Michael Robotham
    5 stars

Wow, intense! Great story, and even though I guessed the twist it just added to the intensity as I yelled at the characters!

  • Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers

    By Jesse Sutanto
    4 stars

A mix between murder mystery and Oprah advice...!

  • The Frozen River

    By Ariel Lawhon
    5 stars

One of my top books for 2024. Vivid and gritty.

  • The Space Between

    By Lauren Keenan
    4 stars

I really enjoyed this but I did find I stumbled on the Te Reo a bit. For me this made the prose a bit disjointed as I had to work out what the Te Reo word was (I have a reasonable level of Te Reo however many words were not 'common usage' and therefore I had to read around the sentence to gain an understanding). This is not a negative, it just slowed the pace down for me a bit.

  • The Creeper

    By Margaret Hickey
    5 stars

Another great read from this author. Interesting premise.

  • The Ledge

    By Christian White
    5 stars

    THAT TWIST!

  • I Hope This Finds You Well

    By Natalie Sue
    4 stars

At times very funny but a heavy rollercoaster... The protagonist gets there in the end as we all do.

  • The God of the Woods

    By Liz Moore
    5 stars

American summer camp mystery... Dual timelines... A twist but not...

  • The Good Turn

    By Dervla McTiernan
    5 stars

    Go Cormac!!

  • The Call

    By Gavin Strawhan
    3 stars

I enjoyed it but it wasn't my favourite read of the year. I do enjoy reading almost anything by NZ authors, set in NZ, though.

  • Return to Blood

    By Michael Bennett
    4 stars

I preferred the first book but am very much enjoying the series.

  • The Many Lives of Mama Love

    By Lara Love Hardin

    Another solid read.
