It's hard to read this without having the movie images in your head, however there are subtle differences which root it in Sweden and in my opinion add to the story (which was already quite good).

Kind of old fashioned and a bit off center this is still a nice and relatable tale. I think it probably loses something in translation but it's whimsical, and a bit sad, with an important message. I was a bit surprised where it ended and it didn't seem to entirely tie up with the prologue but still .. read it, you'll still enjoy it and likely be moved by it for all that.

A thought provoking and shocking but sadly realistic story about racism in America and how it impacts on one young man in his last years at high school. Definitely worth reading though very seeped in American culture the ideas around racism (and sexism) are relevant and important everywhere. However I did feel that the characters weren't all that real or raw (I actually think the female author doesn't get the "male" voice right somehow). To me the characters read more as stereotypes that were useful to tell the story and get the message across. It's a good message but I just feel it could have been better told. If you enjoyed this and want another (in my opinion superior) example try The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas.
