This is the continuation of Nick and Charlie's story. They are in love. They have come out to their families about their relationship. But now they need to think about their futures. Where or if they will go to University? Can they survive a long distance relationship? Should they start having sex? I love these graphic novels because they speak to the young person whether they are LGBTQA or not, on topics they are thinking about.
Sadako was 2 years old when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and aged 10 she contracted `atomic bomb disease’. This book gives the perspective of the war from the Japanese point of view. Also of a girl’s courage and belief that paper cranes carry wishes.
Carson hates the world, his life and considers himself a failure in life. Then one day he meets Christine and his prospective on life starts to change. He starts mowing the lawns at the struggling boarding school for rich drop outs. This progresses to gardening. Importantly he wants to help Christine. Really good book for teenage boys I feel. Carson is how I think a lot of our young men view themselves and the world.
This is Olaudah’s story of how he was taken from his village in Africa and sold into slavery. The time is 1745. He spent ten years serving various masters at sea. He witnessed horrendous cruelty and occasional kindness. He never gave up hope that one day he would be free again.
This is a true story about Walter Tull. In 1888 he was the first professional black football player and first black man to become an officer in the First World War.
Each chapter of the book is about a different student or students and what they do on their way home. We say - when pigs fly, but their saying seems to be ‘with a school bus falling from the sky’. The students are all so different. There is the `Low Cut Crew’ which have all cut their hair short because their parents have cancer. There is a girl who loves skateboarding everywhere. Another is a group who want to help their mate tell a girl he likes her. Jason Reynolds is a really good story teller who knows how to engage teens in reading. Loved this book. Parts I actually laughed out loud.
This is a new New Zealand Author who has self published. I really enjoyed this. I never knew there tunnels that went from Davenport to Mount Albert. I found it a fast paced book that was enjoyable.
This is an excellent book for teenage boys. Trace leaves home at 15 and picks up odd jobs, enough to get by on. He eventually finds his way to Auckland and a boarding house where he meets his room mate Devon. Devon takes Trace into the world of boy racing on Thunder Road. When they steal some marijuana and start selling it, then life gets very complicated for them. I enjoyed it.
This is actually a graphic novel that Brent wrote for his kids and anyone suffering from depression and anxiety. I found it very insightful. The pictures are really good.
Interesting book about the witch who locked Rapanzel in the tower. How did Rapanzel get her name? This is story of the witch Gothel. Why did she lock Rapanzel away? Why did Gothel become some evil? I loved it.
I love the way Serena Valentino interprets how various famous witches became evil. This is a story of 3 sisters who lose a fourth sister. They manage to replica her but it takes a toll on them each. Now those they have wronged want justice. The truth about the twisted sisters is revealed. Do you feel sorry for them or not?
