  • The Widower

    This read has a slightly unsettling feeling to it, Rose*s older sister Kate dies suddenly, so Rose feels duty bound to stay on after the funeral and help look after her baby nephew and young step-niece. But the longer she stays, the more suspicious she becomes about the life Kate was living with her husband Evan. Evan appears to be wanting Rose to fill Kate*s shoes in more ways than one! The plot thickens when Rose finds a note/message from Kate that sets her on the path to find out what really happened in the last few months of Kate*s life and what may be in store for her. A reasonable read, a little slow going and slightly repetitive in some areas, and a creeping sense something dramatic was probably going to happen at the end.

  • We Used To Live Here

    Classed as a horror/thriller type read. Charlie and Eve buy an old house in the middle of nowhere, and a family turns up at the door one day, the father stating he used to live in the house. Eve lets them in, and they stay longer than she would like, with strange happenings going on since they arrived. Found the story slightly creepy at times, but not particularly scary. Story centered mainly on Eve and how she was affected by things, were they real or imagined type scenarios?! - ending was a little unexpected and thought could have been a bit more depth to the plot? An okay story if you like a little tension and slightly unsettling read.

    YA book, based around the premise of good and bad and what do we really believe is true or not? Growing up in a dystopian society based on peace and harmony, and being told that "others" outside of his society are rebels and out to destroy things. Kaspar is starting to doubt what he has been led to believe all his life and when he joins the Guardians he is certain things are not as they seem, so enlists the help of others to find out the truth, lots of action, fighting, death etc, so for a more mature young reader, a typical YA type read, where characters and readers are pushed to question those who are in 'control'.

    A psychological thriller - Ella's sister, Miranda, vanishes without a trace, leaving behind her baby boy (who is now 10). Ella has never given up on finding her sister and goes to extreme lengths to find out what happened to her, even meeting up with the person she suspects of taking her (a killer in prison), putting herself in danger to find the truth! A reasonable read, but could have been honed down a bit, slightly repetitive and dragged out.

Two sisters are out for revenge and to set the record straight about their fathers involvement in US Government's 1969 biological weapons experiments , but they go about it in a deadly way!

    The 28th Discworld book, and was the first DW Fantasy novel written for YA, and won the Carnegie medal. Various themes include - what it means to be able to think, meaning of life, use of power over others, poverty and greed, survival, and fighting for what is right, knowing we all aim for the same thing, happiness with life. Typical Pratchett moral themes, all woven into a fantastical story. A lot to read between the lines, or just read for the enjoyment - as a child would.

    A YA novel - based on historical events, book gives an insight into the transport of 'convict' boys (some as young as 10) who were sent to a boys' prison at Point Puer, Tasmania - story follows two teenage boys and tells the story of how they ended up there and what they go through while at the prison. A bit of a disturbing eye opener as to what went on in the past, and the disparity between the adults in charge and the boys going through hell and feeling hopeless.
