  • Carrie Soto is Back

    By Taylor Jenkins Reid
    4 stars

Before her retirement Carrie Soto was a world class tennis player. Now in her late thirties she is attempting a comeback.I enjoyed reading this story from the perspective of the fierce uncompromising Carrie. Also I liked her lovely, wise and patient father mentoring her towards greatness for the second time around. Reading this book is like being an insider in the world of top level competitive tennis.

  • Lola in the Mirror

    By Trent Dalton
    5 stars

A vivid story of a young girl who lives with her mother in a car in Brisbane , until her life takes a dramatic turn and she discovers she was was correct to believe that she was living someone else's life. Dalton draws his characters with warmth and empathy and tells a riveting story at the same time. I was caught up in the drama as the suspense built up and I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. The ending was extremely satisfying.

  • Circe

    By Madeline Miller
    5 stars

This is the story of Circe, from Greek mythology who is re-imagined as a intelligent, independent woman with limited life choices until she is exiled to the island where after some rollicking adventures she meets Odysseus. I enjoyed Miller's brilliant writing style and the wonderfully imagined characters, settings and events.

  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

    By Taylor Jenkins Reid
    4 stars

A fast- paced story with vivid characters, particularly Evelyn Hugo with her many marriages and secrets. There were plenty of suspense and twists along the way. I also enjoyed reading the backstories of characters who lived in old Hollywood during the different eras. A great surprise ending.

  • Before You Knew My Name

    By Jacqueline Bublitz
    4 stars

A novel set in New York about a young woman who experienced violence, narrated by the protagonist herself. The focus is on the life of the victim as a person rather than another ststistic and although I expected it to be grim I found it to be captivating and well written, providing insights as to how such crimes against women occur.

  • Marple: twelve new stories

    By Naomi Alderman
    4 stars

Each story is a murder mystery starring Miss Marple written by twelve modern crime writers. The differing chacterisations of Miss Marple and the antiquated settings and plots kept me bemused and entertained. A throwback to the Agatha Christie era.
