A fictional account of a mother and daughter who, despite the mortal danger, sheltered Jewish families and a German soldier in their home in Poland during the Second World War. It is inspired by the true story of Franciszka Halamajowa and her daughter, Helena. It is an inspiring tale of the courage, kindness and compassion that can still be found in the darkest of times.
I loved this book. It hooks you from the start with three strong, engaging teenage narrators, and a cracker of a mystery with a suspenseful plot and clever flashbacks. This story of Frankie, Jojo and Ram - three best friends, two first loves, and one stolen baby - is hard to put down.
This is an enirely original reinterpretation of 'Romeo and Juliet' which follows the story of Hunter Lee and Luna Chang, two star-crossed lovers from feuding Chinese and Taiwanese families. On one level it is about the intensity of a teenage romance in an American high school but it weaves elements of magic and Chinese mythology in an entirely original way, culminating in an other-worldly conclusion. It took time to develop but the second half was very absorbing.
It features strong sibling relationships, and even stronger teenage friendships, and explores the last few weeks before graduation for a group of 'ordinary' teenagers.
I have read some of his non-fiction books so I was keen to try his latest fiction release. It was a little implausible in places - especially with some Doctor Dolittle echoes - but the characters were endearing and engaging, and the strong environmental message was interesting and relevant. The plot was weak in places but the sense of place was strong.
I really enjoyed 'How to Bee,' the first novel by this author, and this one has a similar premise - an environmental dystopia where food scarcity threatens humanity, after a deadly fungus decimates all grain supplies. The description of the barren Australian landscape is powerful, and Emery and Ella's desperate escape from the city is engaging. The sibling bond is heart-warming, as is the relationship between the two main characters and their dog-sled team of five, especially with Roochy. It is thought-provoking how competition for scarce resources makes everyone desperate and no-one can be trusted. How do Ella and Emery keep their humanity when everyone is a threat?
A sweet story about two teenagers spending time off the grid with their grandparents in the South Island. The generation difference is explored with some humour and many lessons are learned when Will and Melissa have to step up and save their grandpa.
A fascinating memoir from the inaugural winner of 'Alone Australia.' She is a remarkable woman and I loved her book, full of hard won wisdom about life, death and how deep our connection is to the earth.
Engaging and hopeful. It tackles child poverty in a thoughtful and compassionate way. The lead character, Will Pinker, is likeable and endearing, and the tough decisions he has to make are portrayed realistically and sensitively. A thoughtful and hopeful book.
A strong female lead - Detective Harriet Blue -part detective, part vigilante, is determined to bring sex criminals to justice. Dark and disturbing. Readers of crime fiction will enjoy this compulsively readable tale.
Action-packed and engaging. A short and quite dark crime fiction story about Michael Bennett, a police detective investigating the death of man who plunged to his death from the roof of a Manhattan hotel. All is not as it seems. Be prepared for a high body count.
Teen narrator Jonno is on a trip to South America to watch a total eclipse of the sun but he gets a far more terrifying experience when political activists hi-jack their plane. Exciting, full of tension and it plays on everyone's fears of a plane emergency.
Tense survival and revenge story. Strong female protagonist. Beautiful bond between Jess and her father's dog Bo. Powerful and engaging.
Three adolescents fight to survive in the Colorado wilderness after a tragic accident. All three are running from their own personal demons. Their life or death experience exposes their differences. Santi was the most engaging character. Disappointing ending.
