I enjoyed the style of this book and liked the character voice of Egan. It was quite an instant grip of a read.
This is a slow burner. It switches between several different viewpoints and asks beneath the surface how society can be corrupted by power and how easily the masses are manipulated by the media.
This book was enjoyable as I like the blend of fantasy, te ao māori and adventure. I felt the characters were too young for the adventure they were on. It felt like they should have been at least 11 or 12. I also liked the inclusion of some te reo in the book but at times it felt a little forced...or maybe it is just that having te reo smattered in books is not common yet.
I loved this book. The mixture of real world, fantasy and te āo māori was interesting and informative. I liked the two perspectives of the twins and how it showed they each had strengths in their own ways but that they were better when they were together.
Interesting to see how the ideas and expectations of Bugs was slowly unravelled. I guessed they were female as they reminded me of another novel where this was not evident at first. I liked the way that Bugs showed how she could make her own decisions. It was fun that it was set in Taupō as I knew some of the places that were mentioned and that was quite interesting.
I liked the two perspectives and the change of pace between the two. The whales slow almost lyrical pace versus the tension building will they be able to save the orca of the human story.
Really enjoyed this dystopian novel. Intriguing concept. Easy to see why the idea of unwinding got out of control. Interesting ending.
