Wow. Clever and riveting. Loved the characters, the plot and the beautiful writing. A perfect holiday read.
I really enjoyed this read and found it took me into the characters and places in a very convincing way. Keen to re-read and read the rest of the series.
Interesting to follow the journey of these two boys. Life was certainly tough for the lost generation and it does seem incomprehensible that this was a reality.
A recommendation from my 18 year old niece. She enjoyed it and I did too! A lot about love and grief that did ring true.
I had heard this being shared and wanted better understanding as I did think this theory might have its flaws. I did learn that it must be balanced out with - Let Me. That’s made it make more sense. I did find the anecdotes of interest and it confirmed and extended a lot of my thinking.
Chosen because I like this author. Didn’t disappoint. Two quite ‘unlikeable ‘ or ‘unlikely’ protagonists but the combination is brilliant. Clever characters and storytelling in my view.
I enjoyed this. She was inspirational as a woman squash player to me in my youth. So well known. Learning more about her life and pathway to becoming Race Relations Commissioner was good as I had wondered how she secured that job. She showed nothing has come easy to her and she is continually putting herself into challenging roles which makes her story as inspiring as her sports career. She’s done more for many than I’d ever thought.
Rave reviews. Loved the setting - 1871 Sydney - Cockatoo Island. Terrible place for these girls to be sent and very flawed characters in charge. Mrs Hopkins, as a bereaved mother, was so not right to be in charge of these girls - but she does get some things right. Tricky!
A good read. Can see why Warner Bros see it as a film. It was interesting to see this era from the eyes of a US Nurse. Not always easy or pleasant, but it felt like a realistic version of one woman’s war experience - even if that reality is hard to imagine.
A woman’s Interesting life story shared with readers while being shared with daughters during lock down in a cherry orchard. Character centered verisimilitude I do like but also wonder what makes one life story more interesting than another. In this case, it highlights that who we decide to make a life with and where we lay our roots really does matter.
Lots of twists and turns. Perhaps a few too many for me but can see its appeal to motivated readers.
Love this author. A good read but I love Shooting Stars more!
Loved the timeframes and focus on characters. Very relatable. Wendy was a revelation!
