  • The Bourne Identity

Honestly not sure why this book has sold so many copies. I am clearly not the target audience.

Who doesn't love a story about a taniwha? And this is a local one!

  • Arohanui - Revenge of the Fey

By Helen Pearse-Otene and Andrew Burdan
    4 stars

This is a graphic novel about the conflict between two tribes: Kaitipua, the ancestors of man, and Parehe, the guardians of nature. I found the speech bubbles a bit hard to follow at times. The order was unclear. The illustrations, however, are gorgeous, and the story has a great message.

  • How to Teach Classics to Your Dog

    By Philip Womack
    5 stars

A present from a student. Thanks, Zoe Price. Very readable and full of tips and tricks for learning about or teaching the classical world. The author's dog is very brainy! My favourite quote about Classics from the book: 'It's the closest thing we have to time travel.' Yes!

  • The Underground Railroad

    By Colson Whitehead
    5 stars

What if the underground escape route to freedom for slaves in the southern states was not a metaphorical railroad but an actual underground railway? This is a marvellously inventive, chilling and evocative read. It is beautifully written and packed full of shocks, twists and turns. An amazing book. I will remember it for a long time.

  • My Fine Fellow

    By Jennieke Cohen
    2 stars

Silly. Very silly. Read/watch ‘Pygmalion’ instead, which is funny, moving and very clever. This is not. Even watch ‘My Fair Lady’ instead… Rex Harrison’s ‘singing’ has marginally more appeal. I only finished this because that is what I do when I read a book – and I wanted to see how the stupidity was concluded. Unfortunately, there’s a sequel…
