A challenging and read presenting complex emotions with no clear indication on how to navigate them. A bit like life.
Slow, surreal, with a quality akin to an old black and white film. Primarily a beautiful and poetic exploration of coping with grief, loss and mental illness.
Book 1, which I read as "Tangi" some years ago, is absolutely standout. While the second half of the book is good, it's in my opinion not as emotionally intense or culturally interesting than Tangi.
Interesting, certainly made the amount of times I thought about the Roman Empire rise significantly above baseline.
Just not really my thing I guess.
Absolutely couldn't put this book down. Excellent holiday reading, highly recommend.
If I'd watched this as a movie starring George Clooney I would probably have hated it. But the book was a big muddle of wobbly feelings and unrealised futures and I loved it. Not for those who like knowing things for certain.
Very enjoyable look at impoverished communities in mid-Century USA. Might fetishize poverty a bit, but I don't think that should be a surprise coming from Steinbeck. Still gritty at times, and outlines a beautiful, supportive and diverse community.
Absolutely fantastic and memorable book. Balances a fine line between absolutely bizarre and absurd, and ideologically interesting and profound. I will read more of Pip Adam's.
Finished this book yesterday and it hurts
