  • Between Shades of Grey - the Graphic Novel

By Ruta Sepetys adapted by Andrew Donkin et al
    5 stars

This is the story of Lina Vilkas who is 15 years old in 1941. They are arrested with their family by the NVK the Secret Soviet Police, they are seperated from their family and deported from Lithuania along with their mother and brother to Siberia. As you can imagine this isn't a happy story, but one of human endurance, and the will to survive as well as the depths of human nature. This is an important book on Stalin's occupation of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and the horrifying treatment of people considered "anti-Soviet". Such a relevant story. I would recommend this for secondary schools.

  • The Fairy Tale Fan Club: Legendary Letters Collected by C.C. Cecily

    By Richard Ayoade
    4 stars

What questions have you itching to ask Cinderella or Prince Charming. This book allows us to read about the real lives after the Happily Ever After, with letters being answered by C.CCecily, Senior Secretary of the Fairy Tale Fan Club on behalf of your fairy tale heroes. I enjoyed the humour in this book as well as the gorgeous illustrations by David Roberts. I know that quite a few kids at school who would have a good giggle at this. • A Heart Full Of Headstones

    By Iain Rankin
    4 stars

The 24th book about Rebus the tough old ex Edinburgh police detective. I love reading a Rebus book, as I feel I'm home. The dialogue & conversations are authenic, with cracking put downs. Again Rebus can't help but get involved with his old Nemisis Cafferty. After being asked by him to find out information on a missing ex-landlord of one of Cafferty's Edinburgh pubs.Rebus ends up at the centre of his ex partner detective Clarke's current case of Tynecastle cop who hits his wife. Which opens a whoe can of worms about how corrupt the Tynecastle police station.
