Wow. Powerful. Women fighting for rights across time. Iran. Political power wielding. NZ women need to read this to remember how very fortunate we are.
Touted as a funny story ... it was pretty darned dark to start with. I initially found the main character fairly irritating - but as the story goes on she grows on you. Interesting insight into people's motivations and values - and the nature of various friendships and families. Had to decide to keep reading to start with - but ended up enjoying it. The finish???
An interesting story told by three authors - each telling the story of one of the main characters, who were POW's. I was lured into doing loads of research around this - I hadn't realised that nurses had been left behind in the fall of Manilla. Similarly to "The Women" - females in war zones went unrecognised post war. Interesting to see the different treatment of locals and Americans in this setting. I love Ariel Lawton anyway - and I enjoyed the different tones of the characters written by different people.
Interesting - a perspective on the motivations and experiences of early European women settlers in Aotearoa NZ - South Island. Disconcerting to discover that the author is German and does not reside in NZ....? Interesting to read and think about. First book in a series of three.
I liked the characters and the way their stories were told - probably a better book for old farts like me.
Great story - fascinating history
Not my normal style of book. Ok.
What a great book! Thought provoking and fun
Not wild about this book
Great characters, got me fascinated and researching
Light, easy read
Nice story. Interesting concepts to consider
