Booker Prize winner 2022, really enjoyed it. It is fiction but an insight into Ireland’s Magdalen laundries and based on the life of a man and his family during difficult times.
An American teacher’s ‘loose account’ of her experiences teaching in an international school in northern Iraq. It started as a memoir, but became a novel as the school is fictional and I think, most of the characters.
I couldn't put this book down! It tells the stories of 12 characters living in Britain, their trials and tribulations, and how they are interconnected. It won the Booker Prize 2019 and shortlisted for Women's Prize for Fiction 2020.
I loved it! Essentially about Demon Copperhead being born into poverty, the opioid crisis, and addiction, how he navigates his way through life with family and friends, and his dream to someday see the ocean.
It is about a magpie (named Tama) who Marnie rescues and teaches to speak. The story weaves its way toward the up-and-coming 'Axeman's Carnival', in which Marnie's volatile husband Rob is competing. Through the eyes of Tama we're told the tale of domestic abuse and the price of fame.
An entertaining 'feel good' story about a boy's struggles with friendships and school, and how his life changes when he starts visiting a school counselor.
