  • Comes the night

An intricate, but sometimes confusing story. Decidedly average.

  • Apples Never Fall

    By Liane Moriarty
    4 stars

Took a little while to get into it, but was rewarding once I had.

  • Fire

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

This is the third book in John Boyne's Elements Quartet and following on from the previous two this packs a huge powerful punch. I found it engrossing, but also deeply challenging.

  • Return to Blood

    By Michael Bennett
    4 stars

A good read, but definitely not as captivating as the first in the series.

  • Earth

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

“Earth” is the second book in the “Elements” series. As in the first novella, John Boyne is one of those excellent writers who can weave a captivating story while courageously exploring the complexities of life.

  • My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's Vol. 2

    By Matsuri Akai
    4 stars

  • Unseen Academicals

    By Terry Pratchett
    4 stars

While this story was never exactly anywhere close to one of my favourites in the Discworld books, I'd be lying if I said it wasn’t very good! It has everything. Star-crossed romance between an orc and a kitchen maid, underdog sports story, and a heartwarming tale of raising Ankh-Morpork out of the mud and into civilised behaviour once and for all.

  • Sparrow Wing

    By Jessica Khoury
    5 stars

Overall, this is an excellent middle grade fantasy with the perfect amount of suspense and danger. Great characters, strong themes of friendship and being true to yourself. Can’t wait to read volume two!

  • Fairy Tale

    By Stephen King
    3 stars

A book of two halves. Loved the beginning and his relationship with Bowditch. Went down from there.

  • Better the Blood

    By Michael Bennett
    5 stars

    Great NZ crime thriller.

  • Invisible

    By Christina Diaz Gonzalez
    3 stars

A great premise about accepting others as they are and not judging anyone without having to know them. It also represents the possibility of changing this world to the best by doing simple acts of kindness. But I think the characters were lacking some depth and needed more space to let their personalities develop.

  • The Grimmelings

    By Rachael King
    4 stars

A intriguing middle-grade fantasy adventure of loyalty, courage, and being careful what you wish for.

  • Age of Enchantment

    By Anna James
    4 stars

Anna James has created an original magic world, which I thought was compelling and well thought out. The conception of seasonal magic and her use of 'knots' and 'tangles' within this magic realm felt original and refreshing and would make me want to read the next chronicle in the series.

  • United as One

    By Pittacus Lore
    4 stars

The seventh and final book in the I Am Number Four series. This action-packed YA series finally came to a satisfying conclusion.

  • Masterminds - Payback

    By Gordon Korman
    5 stars

The final book in the Masterminds series — about a group of kids who discover they were cloned from the DNA of some of the greatest criminal masterminds in history. A satisfying end to a great series that managed to maintain its momentum from beginning to end.

  • Ghostlight

    By Kenneth Oppel
    3 stars

Ghostlight is a mildly spooky middle grade novel. Unfortunately, the book felt too long to be a successful read. The action occasionally felt repetitive, and some of the chapters ran on too long to keep the pages turning. Overall, a solid but not a great read.

  • Water

    By John Boyne

A powerful story of a woman, a wife, and a mother coming to terms with her husband's crimes and the pain, shock, loss and void that it has caused. Beautifully written.

An equal parts heart-pounding and heartfelt middle-grade mystery about facing––and accepting––your fears. Themes of family violence and neurodiversity also sensitively tackled.

A graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real.
