  • Hipi the counting sheep

    By Nicole Mataitis
    4 stars

A fun counting book with different seaside animals to help. It has helped my son not just learn how to count 1-10 but to know which number is which & what counting actually means.

  • Tales of Aotearoa - how Maui slowed the sun

By Retold by Donovan Bixley, advised & translated by Dr Darren Joseph & Keri Opai
    5 stars

A great rendition of the well known Māori legend How Maui slowed the sun. A fun, funny and relatable tale of wanting the days to be longer to do all the fun stuff kids like to do every day and whinging when mum tells you it’s bedtime. A beloved book in our house!

  • A lion in the meadow

A beloved kids book (our version is from when we were kids). We love acting out this story when playing in long grass with my kids.

  • Nothing to see here

    By Kevin Wilson
    3 stars

Crazy story about relationships between 2 childhood besties and 2 step-children who spontaneously combust. It had some laugh out loud moments and some sad moments too - as in life. The end was a bit average but the rest was enjoyable.

  • Enough - A story about community

By Sarah Johnson and Deborah Hinde
    5 stars

A lovely story about supporting your community and sharing your strengths, time and resources to help everyone have enough (most of the time).

  • Kuwi’s Rowdy Crowd

    By Kat Merewether
    5 stars

Another fun nz kids book. Filled with both alliteration and onomatopoeia and gorgeous kiwiana illustrations such as ‘kumara-head’ toy, Huwi Potter’s cupboard under the stairs and a kicasso version of Picasso’s famous painting. I always enjoy reading this one to my toddler

  • Kuwi’s Huhu Hunt

  • All that we own know

    By Shilo Kino
    5 stars

I really enjoyed this one as the main character’s way of thinking felt familiar - from students I have worked with in pastoral care roles at school. Maraikura’s strong feelings about colonisation felt justified in her naivety as an adolescent. It reminded me of how our students feel without the lived experience and wisdom that comes with age.
